Description of Walk
This linear walk as part of the Radstock Ring starts at Lullington Village Green and takes you past Lullington Church of All Saints across open fields and into the village of Laverton and through the church yard of St. Mary’s before you continue across pastureland to reach the historic village of Norton St. Philip.
Description of Area
During this linear walk you will enter three attractive historic villages which are surrounded by agricultural land. In the past wool was an important industry and brought wealth into the area and the local trades included weaving and spinning.
The Lullington Estate belonged to King Harold, later passing to Longleat Priory and after the Dissolution of the Monasteries was acquired by the Thynne family. It was sold in the early 19th century by the Marquess of Bath and bought by William Duckworth, who rebuilt the village.
Just to the south of the village is the Orchardleigh Estate, which comprises a Victorian stately home, built in 1856 by Thomas Henry Wyatt for William Duckworth a 13th-century island church and an 18-hole golf course.
St Mary’s Church Laverton is the smallest of the 6 churches in the parish of Hardington Vale and dates back to the 11thc. It is located adjacent to Manor Farm farmhouse and is surrounded by Duchy of Cornwall land.
Norton St Philip is an attractive historic village. In the seventeenth century the village was the site of a battle during the Monmouth Rebellion. The most well-known landmark in Norton St Philip is the George Inn on the High Street. One of the oldest inns in the country, the George has existed for 700 years. The Duke of Monmouth used the building as his headquarters in the village after his rebels retreated from Bath in June 1685. In the Middle Ages Norton St Philip was the site of a wool fair and a destination for cloth merchants

Walk Route
[1] With your back to the village green in Lullington turn right on the road to the Church of All Saints, Lullington, which is well worth a visit if you have the time. Then go through the gate of Court Farm and through the cream pedestrain gate. Walk forwards to a metal stile painted dark red. Over the stile go left between buildings and then turning right as directed into a field. Walk along left hand hedge to find stile leading to footbridge and further stile. In next field go slightly right to the far hedge and over a stile into the next field. Follow the hedge on the right until you find a large gap in the hedge. (See below).
Enter and now walk down with hedge on left .
[2] In the bottom of the field follow the waymark left and you walk through the edge of Park Wood with a stream on your left. Exit the woodland and continue in field near to left hedge until you find a stile and footbridge and further stile crossing the stream. In next field turn right and follow hedge line down to a stile and then the cross track and through a gateway to a short field. Exit through gate on the left to a yard of Manor Farm and just before a red brick building turn right to walk through churchyard of St Mary's Church, Laverton exiting onto lane.
Do not take the footpath almost immediately ahead but turn right along lane and after short distance turn left through kissing gate to field and walk round right hand edge as it goes over the hill to reach gate and footbridge over stream. Walk short distance across field to kissing gate to lane where you turn right and then immediately after the property, The Olde House take stile on left.
[3] Over the stile walk straight ahead in this long field to find stile in left corner of far hedge and in next long field walk along left hand hedge to find kissing gate to lane which you cross and go up the opposite bank to field and turn left and climb gently with horse paddocks on your right. Take the grassy track between the paddocks. You cross the drive of Peart Farm and then go slightly right crossing a further drive and then walk up large grass track between fences to reach small gate. Through gate follow the enclosed path until you enter a field over a footbridge and then walk slightly left across field aiming for edge of the near hedge and then continue in the same direction towards far hedge exiting through kissing gate to lane.
[4] Turn right onto Mackley Lane and walk along until you reach some farm buildings on your right, after passing the farm look for a stile in the hedge on your left. Go into the field and look for a gap on your right into another field and walk along this small field with the hedge on your left, leave the field into a large open space and walk diagonally right down hill to exit onto a track.
Turn right and walk along the track to reach the church of St Philip and St James, Norton St Philip.
